Located within the suburb of Joo Chiat, near Katong, this area is the former enclave for the Peranakan sub culture in Singapore. The peranakans were the desendants of the Chinese merchants who came here to trade and took on the local Malay wives as well as adopting the culture. Peranakan culture - the food, jewellery, furniture as well as houses have been the hallmark of the Katong and Joo Chiat area. Walking around the neighbourhood, one can find many examples of the mix of Chinese and the Malay tradition.
